About me

KathrynWelcome to Family Food on the Table!

I’m Kathryn Doherty, the recipe creator, writer and photographer behind Family Food on the Table.

Here you’ll find lots of easy, healthy recipes to make cooking at home possible, even on the busiest of days.

Fresh, wholesome and oh so tasty – you’ll be inspired to get in the kitchen more and make some delicious dishes.

Whether it’s day-to-day breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas, or homemade baby food, kid snacks and fun treats, I’ve got you covered. Even if you’re a beginner cook.

From scratch food doesn’t have to be hard or intimidating or time-consuming. I have lots of great recipes and resources to help you stick to healthy, real foods in a real world way.

From easy chicken dinners to healthy salads to make-ahead breakfasts for busy mornings, you’re going to find some new favorite recipes here. And ones that’ll fit into your hectic life too!

It’s all about making it happen. And you can do this.

So, about me. I’m Kathryn, a health and nutrition editor, wife, mother of two kids, and devoted food and health nut. We live in Charlotte, N.C., and I am always in my kitchen fixing some food or another. Or doing dishes. So many dishes…

I have a serious love of veggies, spicy food and apples. We eat oatmeal by the boat load and I use pumpkin year round. I’ve always got wine and bourbon on hand. Always.

I’d love to hear from you with questions, ideas, requests or feedback!

You can contact me at kathryn at familyfoodonthetable.com or connect with me on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter.

Also, you can sign up for my free weekly newsletter so you never miss a recipe (I’ll send you a free e-cookbook with 10 healthy weeknight dinner recipes as a thank you)!

Happy home cooking!

XO,

Kathryn

Psst… If you are interested in working with me, I’d love to hear from you too! Please email me at kathryn at familyfoodonthetable.com. I have a media kit available upon request.

Really? You want to know more about me? Well, okay!

More behind-the-scenes tid bits about Kathryn:

  • I like bourbon and the color purple. A lot. 🥃💜
  • I’m a hugger. Give me a hug over a handshake any day.
  • I have a chocolate lab named Dixie. She’s a sweetheart. She almost never barks, which is strange but wonderful.

  • I went to college at Northwestern University (near Chicago) and majored in journalism.
  • I’m a big nerd. My dream job? Full-time student. Instead, I work as a health and nutrition editor so I get to read news all day long. It’s always something new, so it keeps me interested. And on the side, I take Coursera classes on health, nutrition and science. They even have quizzes and grades! 🤓
  • I love books (goes with the nerdom). I love flipping through books, I love browsing for books, I love just looking at books. And of course, cookbooks! I especially like old community cookbooks.
  • Long walks are my jam. Really long. Mostly this takes place on my treadmill in the form of daily exercise, but beaches are even better when I can get there. I’ve also done the 2-day Avon 39.3 mile walk for breast cancer twice and loved every step. 💖

    Hi Kathryn!

My name is Anna Doherty. I am a writer for Elon University’s chapter of Spoon University. I am writing an article about tasty ways to enjoy sweet potatoes this fall and was hoping to include your recipe for sweet potato toast! I would like to include a link to your article and a photo. I will credit you. Is that okay? Let me know as soon as you can! Thanks!

    Best,

Hi Anna! One of my best friends from high school went to Elon! Yes, you are welcome to use a photo and a teaser with a link back to my site, as long as you don’t provide the full recipe and instructions on your site. Thanks so much for including me! Have a great (almost) weekend!

Hi Kathryn! I just now discovered your website! Excellent! You are one funny lady! anyway, I found your recipe for Chicken Fajita Casserole, which I will be trying within a week or so, after I make a Chicken Fajita Soup. I’ve been into the fajita thing lately, go figure! I feel lucky to have also discovered your healthy Chicken Pot Pie recipe -the store bought ones are so loaded with sodium!
Anyway, I love the color purple, too. A neighbor’s daughter started calling me Barney! How rude! Purple lovers unite!
Is it possible to obtain the nutritional value of your recipes?
    Thanks a bunch! God bless!

If I can have Thanksgiving dinner at Cracker Barrell every Thursday, there should be no reason why I can’t have your Blackeyed Peas Casserole occasionally, instead of waiting every new years day, right? It’s on my bucket list of meals to try!

I pulled up your site to forward your breakfast oatmeal squares recipe to a friend (I swear by those things to make the school week possible and have shared them with so many people) and realized you’re from Charlotte – ME TOO! I originally found your recipe on Yummly and had no idea! Now I’ll come back for more just because local recipes seem extra fun! Thanks! 🙂

I recently found your site while looking for easy recipes I can make while I’m recovering from a car accident that has left me without the use of my right leg (temporarily). I just noticed you’re in Charlotte which is pretty cool. I moved to Charlotte in 2015. I look forward to trying some of your recipes!

Kathryn, made your healthy chocolate pancakes. They were just what the doctor ordered. I mean, I have been looking for a wonderful cake, orange pastry, or something to snack on the last weeks.

I often am out of one or two ingredients or am too tired to bake anything. So, I have long awaited this night!
I used white flour, only because I did not have whole wheat on hand. I used coconut nectar because I didn’t have any natural maple or ginger syrup in the house as well. The consistency of the coconut nectar was like syrup and sweet and was sweet too. Anyway, it worked.

Thank you for giving me a wonderful treat to make for myself, Kathryn. 🙂

p.s. I have been wanting to make orange rolls, ya know, like the refrigerator kind. I don’t want all the artificial things the makers put in them, so I never buy and go without. Do you have a recipe? I did not look already, if you do.

    Dear Kathryn,

I don’t have a comment, but rather a question about your recipe for Cheesy Chicken Meatballs. Is the serving size 1 meatball? Is that the quantity factored for the nutritional information?

    Thank you,
    Dorothy

Hi Dorothy, yes, I believe that calorie count and nutrition info is for a single meatball. We usually eat 2-3 (my kids sometimes go for a fourth!). Hope that helps!

    Hello,

I only have settings of high for 4 to 6 hours and low for 8 to 10 hours. I am not home until 530ish. I put it on the low setting of 8 hours. Would I just turn it off when I’m home and eat at 630?

Hi Kay, I’m not sure what recipe you’re asking about but it sounds like a low setting for the least amount of time might be your best bet. Would you like to comment on the recipe post instead of my About page? I might be able to help more.
