Sweet potatoes have a permanent place in my pantry. They store great and I seriously love them.

I bake and roast them, sure, but also do microwave sweet potatoes and Instant Pot sweet potatoes to save time.

Sometimes I make these spicy sweet potato rounds, which are easy to prep (ie, less chopping) and come out tender and flavorful.

I even love me some sweet potato toast in the morning, either topped with some peanut butter and cinnamon or with some avocado and a fried egg.

And at the holidays, we adore this bourbon sweet potato casserole. The buttery pecans topping really makes it special.

Today though, it’s a different take on one of my favorite tubers.

Air Fryer sweet potato fries are tender on the inside and get gorgeous crispy browned edges around the outside.

They’re well seasoned and ready for dipping and best of all, they hardly require any oil.

This is a great way to lighten up your sweet potato side dish, and they are really easy to make.

(The hardest part is just getting them cut down into fry shape. After that, you just toss them with the seasonings and let the “fryer” do the work.)

So let’s get cooking.

Now, I’ve got some notes and tips coming up below on how to make Air Fryer sweet potato fries. Just tryin’ to be helpful.

If you want to jump on down to the recipe, simply scroll right on through the rest of the text. The recipe card is near the bottom of the page, above the comments section.

Recipe Notes:

  • Your fries should be cut to be the same size. The recipe - and timing - is written for fries cut into ¼ inch wide and ¼ inch thick sticks. This small size helps ensure even cooking with tender insides and crispy edges.
  • Peeling the sweet potatoes is optional. I often do, but some people prefer the skin on.
  • Make sure not to overcrowd your Air Fryer. The sweet potato fries should be in an even layer and not too packed together. This helps them cook all the way around and get crispy.
  • Work in batches if needed. It may take 2-3 batches depending on the size of your Air Fryer and how many fries you get from your sweet potatoes.

You can always add all the cooked fries back to the Air Fryer at the end - even though they’ll be stacked - just to make sure they’re still warmed through.

That being said, if you are trying to do a huge batch of fries from 3-4 or more sweet potatoes, roasting them in the oven on a couple of sheet pans is probably a better bet. It’ll take longer to do that many batches in an Air Fryer.

(Just trying to save you that frustration.)

Also, because I know this is your main question…

How long do you cook sweet potato fries in an Air Fryer?

- Sweet potato fries will cook in the Air Fryer in 14-18 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Shake the tray halfway through the cooking time to ensure even cooking and crisping.

And in case you are in the market for an Air Fryer, I highly recommend both of mine.

Yes, I have two. Don’t judge.

I got the first one as a gift for Christmas two years ago and it’s been fabulous, but it’s on the small size. (Would be great for singles or couples.)

So this past year, I bought myself a bigger one for Christmas. I got this one (It’s usually on sale, which is nice) and I’ve loved it. It’s a better fit for families with children, or just if you’re cooking for bigger groups.

Now, these fries are great on their own. Flavorful and delicious.

However, they are fries, so if you want to dip them, I’ve got a few ideas.

Dipping Sauces:

  • Ketchup
  • BBQ sauce
  • Ranch dressing
  • Honey mustard
  • Mayonnaise (not my thing, but it’s a thing)

You could also serve them with some toppings to add a little pizzazz if you like. Again, totally optional.

Topping Ideas:

  • Shredded cheese to melt on top
  • Cooked, crumbled bacon
  • Chopped fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro
  • Chopped chives
  • Hot sauce or sriracha

Or any combination of the above!

Last thing, if you have leftovers, they’ll keep in the fridge, covered, for up to 5 days.

You can reheat them in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes, until warmed through, or put them in the oven on broil for a few minutes.

Ta-da! I do hope you give these sweet potato fries a try soon. I think this will be your new favorite way to make them.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Air Fryer sweet potato fries are tender on the inside with gorgeous crispy browned edges around the outside. They’re easy to make, well seasoned and ready for dipping.
Prep Time10 minutes mins
Cook Time15 minutes mins
Total Time25 minutes mins
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, cut into ¼ inch wide and thick fries
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • Preheat the Air Fryer to 375, if yours requires preheating.
  • Combine the sweet potatoes with the oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Toss well to coat them evenly.
  • Spray the Air Fryer insert with cooking spray and add the sweet potato fries in an even layer. (If you have too many, work in batches. Don’t overcrowd or they won’t cook properly or get crispy edges.)
  • Cook the sweet potato fries at 375 for 14-18 minutes, shaking the tray halfway through the cook time to promote even roasting.
  • Start to check the sweet potatoes at 14 minutes and watch closely so they don’t burn.
  • If working in batches, repeat with the remaining sweet potato fries. You can add all of the cooked fries, stacked, to the Air Fryer for a final 1-2 minutes of cook time to ensure they’re all warmed through.
  • Serve hot, with any desired toppings or dipping sauces (see notes below).
