Cheesy sloppy Joe casserole is full of saucy sloppy Joe's, melted cheese and crusty bread on top - perfect for an easy family dinner!

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/4 pounds ground turkey (I use 7% fat)
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 small jalapeno, finely chopped (can omit for less heat)
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 3/4 cup liquid of choice: beer, low-sodium chicken broth or water
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 to 1 tablespoon sriracha sauce (optional: you can omit or reduce for less heat)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 small French bread loaf, cut into thick 1-inch slices
  • Olive oil for drizzling

Preheat oven to 350. Spray an 8x12 inch casserole dish with cooking spray and set aside.

To make the sloppy Joe's, heat oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat.

Add ground turkey, green pepper and jalapeno, if using. Sauté until the ground turkey is cooked through and the peppers are tender, about 8-10 minutes.

Add garlic and chili powder and sauté for another minute.

Add liquid of choice, ketchup, sriracha (if using) and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and bring to a simmer, then turn off heat.

Transfer sloppy Joe mixture to prepared casserole dish. Top with cheddar cheese then bread slices. Drizzle the bread with a little olive oil.

Transfer the casserole dish to the oven and bake at 350 for 15 minutes. If desired, you can broil for an additional minute to help the bread pieces brown up. Just be sure to watch it carefully!

To serve: Invert the bread onto the plate so the crusty side is down then spoon the sloppy Joe mixture on top of the bread. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

I use ground turkey for my sloppy Joe’s, but you can substitute ground beef if you prefer. Just make sure to drain off any extra grease.

I use a loaf of French bread, but you could substitute your favorite type of bread here. Or use biscuits!

You can spice this up with the jalapeño (leave some of the membranes and seeds in) and more sriracha sauce or you can omit or reduce those for less heat.

You can make the full recipe in an 8x12 inch casserole dish or do half the recipe in an 8x8 inch pan.

You can prep this ahead! You can make the sloppy Joe’s mixture and shred the cheese and then keep them covered in the refrigerator. Then you just need to assemble the casserole, add the bread and put it in the oven!
