Healthy spinach dip is warm, creamy and cheesy and delicious for a lightened up appetizer. Serve with chips, crackers, bread or veggies for scooping.
Soccer season is underway for my 8-year-old son, and we are loving watching the games on the weekend! It's a nice excuse to be outside for a long stretch, and he's got a fun team with a great coach.
Although, I'll be happy when it finally starts to cool off and feel like fall - I think that's coming this week. (Looking forward to highs in the mid 70s for a few days, instead of the upper 80s and low 90s like we've been having.)
I'm also pulling out my fall wreaths and decor, and trying patiently to wait to put up ALL the Halloween things. It's coming though...
OK, let's move along to the food.
Today I’m happy to be sharing this healthy spinach dip, which is a warm, creamy, delicious and veggie-filled dip.
It’s great for a lightened up appetizer and for adding a bit of green to your snack spread. (Cause I know I’m not the only one who wants a healthier option for game day eats and get togethers!)
This dip is loaded with spinach, has a great creaminess and is topped with melty, stretchy mozzarella cheese.
It’s super easy to put together and it bakes up brown, bubbly and beautiful. (Oh, and you can definitely prep it ahead if needed.)
You and your friends will be happily dipping and scooping this dip again and again.
Another delicious dip is this healthier caramelized onion dip. Yay for all the dips!
Or for some other favorite appetizers, if you need more ideas, try these baked vegetable egg rolls, BBQ chicken sliders and stuffed mushrooms.
OK, let’s get to cooking.
Now, I’ve got some notes and substitutions coming up below on how to make healthy spinach dip. Just tryin’ to be helpful.

Ingredient Notes:
- Spinach: Your spinach needs to be thawed and squeezed dry for this recipe, so please plan accordingly. You can thaw frozen spinach quickly in a colander (with small holes so it doesn't just fall through) under running water. Just be sure to let it set for a few minutes and squeeze it really, really well to remove the excess moisture.
- Greek yogurt: You can use nonfat plain Greek yogurt or a 2% or 5% version.
- Mayonnaise: You can use regular or low-fat mayo for this recipe, whatever you have on hand. You could also try substituting extra Greek yogurt in place of the mayo, but it may affect the creaminess of the dip.
- Onions: This recipe calls for a couple of green onions. You could also use a regular onion, but it would need to be sautéed in a little olive oil until softened before you add it.
- Mozzarella: The dip is topped with mozzarella cheese. You could also try this with a shredded Italian blend cheese if you prefer.
So that's what you need to make it and guys, this is SO easy to throw together.
You combine the spinach and everything else except the cheese. Mix well. Dump in your casserole dish. Top with cheese and bake.
Ta-da! That is all folks.
As for serving, we’ve got lots of options of what we can dip and scoop with.
Serving ideas for spinach dip:
- Serve with tortilla chips or corn chips for scooping.
- Or serve with a variety of cracker options for dipping.
- You could also serve this with some baguette slices for everyone to scoop up some dip and enjoy with their bread.
- Veggie sticks, like bell pepper strips or carrot sticks, can also be used with this dip.
If you have other ideas, let us all know in the comments below!
Oh, and like any appetizer, it can be helpful to make this ahead if you’ve got friends or family coming over. Totally do-able.
Make-ahead tips for healthy spinach dip:
- You can make and assemble the entire dish ahead of time. Mix everything, put it in your baking dish and top with the cheese. Cover and refrigerate for up to 1-2 days.
- Pull the baking dish out of the refrigerator as you preheat the oven.
- Bake as directed, adding an extra 5 minutes as needed to make sure everything gets nice and hot and melted.
So easy.
Finally, since we are all changing up how we gather and serve dishes these days, one note on safety.
You can serve this dip with a spoon so that no one dips their food directly into the dish.
OR you can bake it off and then scoop out servings in individual ramekins or other small containers. Everyone gets their own so it’s separate and safe. (And people can double dip as they please.)
If you love a little veggies with your appetizer spread, I hope you give this spinach dip a try.
Enjoy!
XO,
Kathryn
