Strawberry overnight oats are an easy, healthy, make-ahead breakfast that you can try 2 ways -- as strawberry banana or strawberry chocolate!

Strawberry overnight oats made 2 different ways and served in small glass jars on a white platter with spoons to the side.

You’ve probably noticed by now we eat a lot of different forms of oats and oatmeal around here. Happily guilty as charged.

(I even made a whole category of healthy oatmeal recipes if you want to go browse and get some inspiration!)

Overnight oats are a weekly staple.

I make them every.single.Sunday. Without fail.

If we travel (like this week when we are on spring break!), oatmeal jars come with us. The kiddos have come to know what day of the week it is based on what variety of overnight oatmeal jar they have for breakfast.

OK, that may be a little weird, but it’s just how we work. #gowithit

We started with these 3 favorites and they will forever be classics in our house, but of course, I like to explore a bit and try new things. Peach overnight oats are great in the summer, as are cherry chocolate chip overnight oats.

My recent obsession has been strawberry overnight oats.

Because, well, strawberry season. ❤️

So today I'm excited to share my two favorites strawberry overnight oatmeal jars with you. Let's get into it.

I've got some notes, tips and substitutions coming up below on making strawberry overnight oats. Just tryin' to be helpful.

If you want to jump on down to the recipe, simply scroll right on through the rest of the text. The recipe card is near the bottom of the page, above the comments section.

Strawberry Chocolate Overnight Oats

Close up of a strawberry chocolate overnight oatmeal jar with a spoon resting in the top.

These have cocoa powder mixed in and mini chocolate chips throughout for a double hit of chocolate in the morning. It’s my favorite. I even let the kiddos have this one and they are smitten too.

  • Strawberries: The strawberries, as long as they aren’t overripe, can be added when you’re mixing up the jars and will be fine for 3-4 days. (If yours are super ripe already, either eat the oatmeal jar the next day or stir them into the jars in the morning right before you eat it.)
  • Chocolate: The mini chocolate chips can also be added in when you are mixing everything together. If you eat your jar the next day, they will still be a little bit hard. By the second day, they have softened in the mixture and you taste their sweetness but not their texture. I prefer them this way.
  • Milk: You can use skim milk, 2% or an alternative milk like soy milk or almond milk. We prefer soy milk; it adds some extra sweetness, but whatever you have on hand is fine.
  • Greek yogurt: The Greek yogurt helps thicken up the oats so it's more scoop-able. However, if you don't have any, you could try substituting that with some extra milk instead.
  • Size: My 8 oz. jars for this recipe are a fairly small serving size. It’s plenty for my kids, but I often pair it with some other fresh fruit or small morning snack for me. You could also double the recipe and use a larger mason jar to make a bigger serving if you’d like.

Strawberry Banana Overnight Oats

Close up of a strawberry banana overnight oatmeal jar with a spoon resting in the top.

I also had to try a strawberry and banana version because those two fruits just go so well together. The soft, creamy banana and the juicy, red strawberries just love cozying up. And they are perfect in the mornings.

  • Strawberries: Same deal with the strawberries -- add them when you're mixing or when you're eating. See above.
  • Also, same notes as above for the milk, Greek yogurt, jar sizes, etc.
  • Banana: The banana can be added in three ways (I’ve tried all of these). You can:
  1. Slice or dice the banana and add it when you are mixing the jars. If you do this, just be sure to stir the banana pieces into the mixture really well and make sure they are completely covered. Any bananas sticking up at the top of the jar will start to turn brown by morning. Also make sure to eat the jar the next day. After that, any of the bananas risk browning. Or you can...
  2. Slice or dice your bananas and add them in the morning before you eat the jar. Or...
  3. You can mash up your banana and stir the puree into the jars. You’ll use about half of a small banana per jar. Mix it well and it will be good to go in the morning. But again, don’t wait longer than that or it could turn brown.

Speaking of, I use 8 oz. (half-pint) canning jars that I got as a set from Amazon. They are great for these oatmeal jars and I also use them all the time for homemade dressings.

I also like these plastic lids because they're easier to clean than those metal ones that come with the jars. (Especially cause I just throw them in the top rack of the dishwasher.)

Also, these are naturally gluten-free, so long as you use certified gluten-free oats.

Want to make dairy-free or vegan overnight oats? Totally do-able!

Dairy Free Notes

  • Use soy milk or almond milk as the milk in this recipe.
  • Substitute goat milk yogurt for the Greek yogurt. (I find it at Trader Joe’s.) You could also use a coconut or soy yogurt but those may impact the flavor a bit more.

Vegan Notes

  • Use soy milk or almond milk as the milk in this recipe.
  • Swap a coconut milk or soy yogurt in place of the Greek yogurt. Try to go for as neutral a flavor as possible.
  • Use agave or maple syrup as the sweetener in place of the honey.
  • Be sure to use vegan chocolate chips.
Four small glass canning jars full of an overnight oatmeal mixture with strawberries and bananas in two and strawberries and mini chocolate chips in the other.

Storage Tips

  • Overnight oats will keep, covered, in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • However, it depends a bit on what type of mix-ins you use. Some softer fruits or mix-ins may start to get a little mushy after 4-5 days.
  • The jars are ready to serve, cold, immediately from the fridge. Add any desired toppings, grab your spoon and dig in!

And there you have it!

Strawberry overnight oats will add some new jars to our regular rotation. My kids are gonna be so confused on what day it is.

Enjoy!

XO,

Kathryn

Strawberry Overnight Oats {2 ways}

Strawberry overnight oats are an easy, healthy, make-ahead breakfast that you can try 2 ways -- as strawberry banana or strawberry chocolate!
Prep Time10 minutes mins
Total Time10 minutes mins
Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients

For the strawberry chocolate overnight oats:

  • ¼ cup old fashioned oats
  • ⅓ cup milk, any kind - skim, 2%, soy
  • ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt, I use non-fat
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • ½ tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ¼ cup diced strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips

For the strawberry banana overnight oats:

  • ¼ cup old fashioned oats
  • ⅓ cup milk, any kind - skim, 2%, soy
  • ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt, I use non-fat
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ¼ cup diced strawberries
  • ¼ cup sliced or diced bananas

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a small glass jar with a lid. Mix well to combine. (See notes below on when to wait to add the fruit.)
  • Refrigerate the jars overnight to allow the oats to soften. Serve cold in the morning.

Notes

Strawberries: The strawberries, as long as they aren’t overripe, can be added when you’re mixing up the jars and will be fine for 3-4 days. (If yours are super ripe already, either eat the oatmeal jar the next day or stir them into the jars in the morning right before you eat it.)
Banana: The banana can be added in one of three ways (I've tried them all):
  1. Slice or dice the banana and add it when you are mixing the jars. If you do this, just be sure to stir the banana pieces into the mixture really well and make sure they are completely covered. Servings: You can make a single jar, 2-3 or a dozen; as many as you'd like!
Storage: Overnight oats will keep, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. Just be sure to wait to add the fruits so they don't get mushy.
Dairy-free: Use soy milk or almond milk for the milk in the recipe and use goat's milk yogurt instead of Greek yogurt. You could also try using a coconut or soy yogurt but those may impact the flavor a bit more.
Vegan: Use soy milk or almond milk for the milk in the recipe. Use a coconut or soy yogurt in place of the Greek yogurt (try to go for as neutral a flavor as possible). And use agave or maple syrup in place of the honey. Also be sure to use vegan chocolate chips for the chocolate version.

Smart minds think alike. We just created a similar recipe using kefir! I can't wait to share it with you. Scheduled to publish in the coming weeks. I LOVE your versions. I went through a mega overnight oats binge recently ... and for good reason 🙂 Pinning now!

I've never tried overnight oats! I know...I'm probably the last person on earth. It's on my "to try" list, though, and this recipe looks great! Question: Do you think it would still be good without the yogurt? My daughter is allergic to dairy.

Definitely give them a try Alyssa! They are really delicious and make our mornings so easy 🙂 My daughter was allergic to cow's milk until last year (outgrew it at age 4) and I made oatmeal jars for her with soy milk and plain goat's milk yogurt. We bought ours at Trader Joe's and she loved it (still prefers it). You could also substitute coconut milk yogurt though it definitely has a bit of flavor to it. Or if you want to skip the yogurt, I'd suggest increasing the milk to 1/2 cup and maybe adding another teaspoon of chia seeds to help it thicken up and have a good consistency. Would love to hear if you try it!
I also have a post on our experience with her milk allergy if that's helpful for you: https://www.familyfoodonthetable.com/milk-allergy-in-toddlers-and-young-children/

I love you and your family's oat obsession (if I may call it that), Kathryn! 😀 It means there are just so many delicious oat recipes on your blog - keep them coming, please! 😉 These lovely little jars are no exception. I think I'll go for the chocolate version because...well, chocolate! Those mini chocolate chips are just way too adorable, but the banana version sounds delicious too.

There ain't nothing wrong with being addicted to oats, girlfriend! SO much healthier than a lot of other vices out there!! Loving both of these strawberry overnight varieties! I'm looking at these as a him and her type of oats, because the hubster would devour the strawberry chocolate and I would go to town on the strawberry-banana! Love that you pack these in jars for the road! Yay to portable eats! Cheers dear! I hope you and your family have a fabulous spring break!! <3

Hi kathryn, I was wondering if ground flax seed would be ok instead of chia seed? And also would using instant oatmeal work the same? Or should i get some regular oats? By the way, Love reading your recipes there so delicious and wonderful!!! Xo

Hi Krista! I don't think ground flax seeds help thicken up liquids the same way chia seeds do so the texture might be a bit different if you substitute those. But you could certainly try it! Also, I've never tried these with instant oats but I think that would work fine because they would break down and be softened. Hope that helps! 🙂

Hi Sandi! Yes, you leave the lids on the jars overnight in the fridge. I use an 8 oz. size jar (like these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HNPNNLS/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HNPNNLS&linkCode=as2&tag=famfooontheta-20&linkId=MZDPBSVSD3DU7C4V - also linked to in the recipe card). The calorie count will vary depending on which type you make but they are about 250-300 calories per jar. I hope that helps and I hope you enjoy these!

These look great. Most of the recipes I have come across come for 1/2 cup of oats, plus banana and strawberries on top of that....the carbs and calories go creeping way up! I am going to try this version and then I will have room for a hard egg or sausage on the side.

Hi Mackenzie, yes, I think that would be fine! They will soften faster than regular oats and you may want a little less milk (or a little more quick oats) to balance the texture difference, but they should work. (Also, stay tuned because I have a peanut butter oatmeal cookie recipe coming soon that uses quick oats!) Hope you enjoy them!

Hi! It was really yummy. Thanks!! But I have a question. How did you calculate the calories? I used this website (https://foodval.com/) but got only 7 grams of protein. Maybe there was some mistake? Can you give me recommendations?

Hi, I'm so glad you enjoyed them! I have a nutrition calculator that is part of my recipe card - it's integrated. I just went through and re-ran the numbers (they are always tweaking and adjusting and refining things) and it came out a little different, with 12 grams of protein. My Greek yogurt alone has 6 grams of protein in 1/4 cup and I think the rest is coming a bit from the oats, the chia seeds, the milk, etc. Also, these stats are for a combination of both types of jars (the calculator adds up all of the ingredients listed and divides by 2), so it will vary a bit depending on which one you make. Hope that helps!
